Avatar

December 29th, 2009

I enter the theater expecting a 3d experience.

Instead I am transported to a distant blue jovian gas giant, perhaps a far off relative of our own Jupiter. The blue giant looms in front of our ship. Swirling patterns drive across the planet. I almost miss the small moon between our ship and the blue giant. The moon is Pandora.

Pandora is covered with breath taking forests, jungles and floating mountains. The surface becomes even more beautiful as the shuttle eases into a lower altitude. Trees and vines pull at each other to reach higher and higher into the sky. Strange creatures inhabit the skies and jungles. The land is lush, untamed, wild… primal.

We are landing now. The shuttle sets down in what appears to be a refinery. I spend some time wandering around the various corridors and labs, making myself familiar with what will be called home. Finally, I arrive at the Avatar lab.

I have spent hours in an Avatar simulator. Most of my time involved mastering motor control and becoming used to the extra features humans do not possess. I figure I am ready for the real deal.

The Avatar pod feels warm as I sink into memory foam like bed. The tech closes the lid. I close my eyes.

I open my eyes and find myself laying on a medical table. Avatar assistants are checking my eye dilation. Something tickles my ear.  My ear twitches and I feel the tickle again.  An assistant is snapping their fingers in my other ear, checking for a correct auditory response. I was not aware that having ears that I can move would cause such a tickling sensation, that wasn’t in the simulations. I am given the green light and head out of the Avatar staging area.

There is a gas in the atmosphere of Pandora that will kill a human in a few minutes. When working outside we are forced to use masks. I take a deep breath. The atmosphere is refreshing in this body. My Avatar, grown from my DNA and DNA from the indigenous species of Pandora, is not affect by the gas.

The Avatar body feels incredibly nimble and strong.  A single step covers many human strides. Testing my strength and balance I leap into the air. An uncontrollable smile paints itself across my face. The smile reveals the Avatars extra long k9 teeth. Yards away from my launch point I land in perfect balance. My Avatars tail, even for its small size, is enough to aid in balance.

I dig my bare feet the fresh dirt. All those hours in the simulator did nothing to prepare me for startling  and strong feeling welling up inside. It is a feeling of connection with my surroundings; the jungle, the ground and air. It grows stronger. I have the urge to scout, hunt and explore. The feeling is primal.

Despite the simple plot, the few surprises, or other flaws, Avatar is an amazing experience. I really love to get into a movie. Avatar does an excellent job of allowing the watcher to step into an Avatar and feel the experience.

I know many people don’t like preachy movies. I am in the choir for the message of this movie. It is sad in this fictional future we still oppress and destroy to gain wealth and power.

That obvious and rehashed message aside Avatar captures something I have not felt in any other movie. It is a connection with the fictional world Pandora, with the plants, the animals and even the Na’vi.

I grew up in the Mojave desert in California and in the coastal rain forests in Oregon. I spent a lot of time exploring, hunting lizards and climbing trees. Finding a good vantage point, be it a mound in the desert or a large cedar branch in the forest, made for an excellent location to be silent, watch and listen. You get a real feeling of connection with your surroundings. A breeze moving through the trees. A bird calling in the distance. The scampering of a reptile into a creosote bush.

Avatar brought a lot of those feelings back to life. All the great science fiction, amazing animation, incredible beauty of Pandora and cool mech techology aside, I would highly suggest Avatar for the connection with nature the film captures and how well the film allows the watcher to experience that connection.

Now go watch it!

Mass media starting to admit failing dollar?

September 27th, 2009

What is this? Can it be? CNBC seriously interviewing someone

that has research on the dollar failing? I guess they had come

out with it at some point. I can’t think of  any individual that

has warned of this is in the past. /sarcasm

The IMF has started issuing debt (printing money). This is a first

for the IMF. I wonder how a central world bank will affect our

world down the road.

Dawn of War 2

February 19th, 2009

I enjoyed the first Dawn of War game so I decided to pick up the second one.

The joke was on me for not reading up about the games install and service “features”. The game only runs through the gaming “service” Steam. More like malware then anything.

They are using Steam for DRM “protection”. I bought this title from Direct2Drive. I did not download it from a torrent site. Yet, to launch my game I have to go through check points like I am the thief.

If I can’t connect to Steam I can’t run the legit version I bought.

Their DRM system does nothing, NOTHING to protect their game. I could have grabbed it from a torrent or other type of download site.  I would not have to deal with launching a 3rd party software just to run my game. I would also be able to run my game while my internet connection is down.

So thanks Relic, thanks for sticking it someone that actually bought your software. The boards that decide these things are evidently not familar with blow back. These draconian DRM systems, that don’t protect the software at all, will cause more priacy or reduce sales in the long run. I never buy a Steam title again. Way to go guys.

No, I have not played the game yet. Steams update “service” is hanging. I’ve had to change my download region a few times trying to get the latest update through Steam. Hopefully there is just a patch I can download instead.

At this point I may just download a cracked version so I don’t have to deal with Steam.

I can only hope the gameplay makes up for the overall experience of this game thus far.

The Shack

January 31st, 2009

This may be old news to some.

I just finished reading The Shack. This is an amazing book.

It is really introspective and smashes many paradigms associated with God.

I highly suggest reading this book.

Bennington Lake

December 20th, 2008

Sid wanted to try sledding at Bennington Lake Saturday afternoon.

It was crazy cold. I don’t think I have been sledding when it was that cold. We are guessing about 7 degrees without wind chill. Our protected outdoor thermometer read 10 degrees when we left the house.

The snow was too light and dry to make a good sled run. The run would not pack very well. The plastic sleds would just cut down to the rocks on the side of the dam, despite the snow being knee to thigh deep.

There was one tube and it worked pretty good. You could get a lot of speed going down the side of the dam. Maybe when it is not so cold and the snow packs better we will try it again.

Here are some shots from the top of the dam.

Best game of 2008

December 14th, 2008

Fallout 3 is a great game and my pick for the best title of 2008.

Fallout is very open ended. There is a main story line that you

can follow but you are free to explore and experience the world.

Your actions in the game will affect your karma. Karma is a sliding

scale that will rate your character toward evil or good. Different

characters in the game will treat you differently based on this

scale. The various factions will also treat you differently, some

may even dispatch bounty hunters to take you out.

The game really rewards exploration. Poking around will usual

reward with a nice new shiny… or  a hideous beast looking to

make a meal of you.

You can either play combat in FPS real time or use the turn

based VATS system. The combat in fallout is burtal, following

in the foot steps of the previous two games. There is a reason

this game was banned in a few countries.

The dialog system is fun as usual. Just like Fallout 1 and 2

you will have different dialog options depending on your

character stats.

The size of the map may not seem very large but Bethesda

really packed in a lot of content. You may find a whole new

area right next to a mission you did earlier.

Players can mod the game. Bethesda has released their editing

kit, the Geck.

Best of all the game keeps the same nuclear post apocalyptic feel

of Fallout 1 and 2.

Fallout 3 is my pick for best game of 2008.

Beach Sunset

December 14th, 2008

A few weeks back we spent some time at the beach.

I had a great time just relaxing. There were some

really nice sunsets.
